Have Mold In Your Home? Important Remediation Steps To Follow

Posted on: 28 January 2019

When mold is found in your home, you need an action plan. There are certain steps that you should follow when mold is found in your home. You want to stop whatever is fueling the mold, isolate the area, and remove the mold from your home.

#1 Stop the Fuel

The first thing you need to do is stop whatever is fueling the mold. More often than not, mold issues arise because of a water problem. Maybe water is leaking in through your roof. Maybe you have a leaky pipe under the counter. Maybe your fans are not removing enough moisture in the bathroom.

You need to find what is fueling the mold and stop that problem. If the roof is leaking, get it patched. If the pipe is leaking, get it replaced. If there is too much moisture and not enough ventilation in your bathroom, get it repaired. You need to figure out what is causing the mold, and stop it.

#2 Isolate the Area

Second, you need to isolate the area. The tricky thing about mold spores is that they cannot be seen with the naked eye, and they are really good at traveling around. Mold spores are so tiny that they can come in through the screen on your windows.  That is why you want to isolate the area as much as possible so you can stop the spread of dangerous mold spores to the rest of your home.

That means putting up sheeting around the area where the mold is. You want to put thick sheeting around the area where the mold is located to contain it. Be sure to use duct tape to seal up any seams.

#3 Clean the Area

Once you isolate the area, it is time to clean the area. Any material that is covered in mold should be removed; don't try to save it. You risk the chance of the material not actually being clean and having to deal with the issue again.

You should also remove any nearby porous material. Any nearby porous material could also be contaminated with mold. Put the mold inside of thick plastic bags that you can seal up. Once you seal up the bags, put them inside of another trash bag. You don't want to risk mold spores getting into the rest of your home.

Cleaning up mold properly can be an intensive process, which is why it can be a good idea to hire a mold remediation team to help you get everything done right.
