Who, What, Why, And How: Vent Cleaning

Posted on: 21 September 2020

Did you know that the air vents in your home should be cleaned? Although you might figure that the air moving through these vents would keep dust and debris out of them, this is not really the case. Vent cleaning is a good idea — and the text that follows will explain the who, what, why, and how of this chore.

Who should clean your vents?

Your best bet, in most cases, is to hire a professional vent cleaning service. They have equipment that can reach deeper into the vents to remove debris that you would not be able to reach on your own. It's also a good idea to have a pro out to clean your vents because as they do so, they will keep an eye out for any indications of a problem. For example, if your vent is developing a leak or part of the metal is starting to rust, a vent cleaning service can spot this and let you know.

What is vent cleaning, actually?

It's as simple as it sounds! It's the process of removing anything and everything from our vents. Dust, dirt, mold spores, and dust mites will all be sucked away. If there are any larger items, such as dog toys or kids' socks, in your vents, those will be cleaned away as well.

Why is vent cleaning so important?

If your vents are clean, the rest of your home will stay cleaner. Dust won't get scattered over everything each time the heat or air conditioning is turned on! Vent cleaning also helps your HVAC work as efficiently as possible. Dirt and grime won't accumulate on your furnace or air conditioner's parts, so the equipment won't have to use as much energy to exchange heat. Also, if you have allergies, you should notice fewer symptoms after duct cleaning since there won't be as much dust and pet dander flowing through the air.

How do you clean your vents?

If you do decide to clean your own vents, rather than hiring a professional, start by removing the vent covers. Then, use a vacuum cleaner to suck any dust and debris out of the vents. Reach as far down as you can. If you see any caked-on dust, try to scrub it away with a damp cloth or sponge. Finally, wash your vent covers with soap and water. Let them dry, and screw them back into place.

Make sure you're taking good care of your vents. With regular cleaning, they'll take better care of you!
